Gifts from a Shaver Friend

I had a box show up in the mail the other day,

It was from a shaving friend no less.  A little back story is in order.  I have a friend, lets just call him DLB, that I have met in my shaving adventures in a forum.  Since our first meeting we have stayed in touch and kept tabs on each others shaving adventures.  One day he emailed me saying he had a couple spare razors, aftershave and shave oil.  He wanted to know if I would like to have them, I think I nearly broke my fingers trying to type so fast, YES!  I was so excited, my first person, a friend thru shaving no less, to send me some gear to try out.  With much gratitude I emailed back saying I would love to try out what every he had to send my way.

A couple of days ago the packaged had arrived.  He had told me before what he was sending me, I was still surprised to what was in the box.  He shoved a lot in there for being so small a parcel.  It was like the never-ending trick you see on tv, it just kept coming out of the box.  After unpacking it all I was even more grateful.  So much to try out, and smelled good as well.  The bottles leaked out a tiny bit.

With out further delay, this is what was included.  Two bakelite Gillette razors, some Preferred Stock Cologne and after shave, and two bottles of King of Shaves Shaving oil.  I havent used any of it yet, but am excited to do so.  The razors look awesome in particular.  DLB told me that they were from 1951 and 1938-1945.  One of the two was a military issue razor no less.  So cool to take part not only in a great shave, but history as well.  Thanks again DLB, it is much appreciated.

Here is the pictures of what he sent me:

First the razors the copper one is the one from 1951, the silver one is the one from 1938-1945 and is a military issue one.

Here is the oil and cologne.

I cant wait to put it all to good use.  Cheers!

The Shaver,

The Big Two Zero, shave 20

Well I have now hit a double ten shaving experience today,

Today was the big 20th shave.  I know it has been much-anticipated and my fans have been sitting on the edge of their seats for a few days anxiously awaiting the post online.  Well know you can sit back and relax, it’s here.  Today was a momentous occasion in more than just one way, it was also a remarkable display of shaving fortitude.

I had been taking a break from the old straits for a while for a few reasons.  They ranged from having a new DE and wanting to put it to use, to a lack luster feeling over my darling straits.  So I used the DE with some good experience, in that it is faster and I just wanted to play with my new shaving tool, or toy, however you may see it.  It was back to business today.  Mainly I finally just had some time to my self to enjoy shaving and be alone with my sharpest acquaintance.

Today was also a nice time to just sit, well stand, back and just enjoy a nice shave.  Have been having a lot of poo poo going on in my life and I just needed to get away.  So away I have gotten and to a shave I have been relaxing.  I think I was yearning for my straight for a couple of days now but just didnt have the time or wasnt in the right mind-set to do so.  Every thing just fell into place today, I had a few hours to digress a bit from the week, and had some time alone to properly prep to shave.

I just felt something different today about straight shaving.  It was more of a comfort need than an actual requirement to shave.  I wanted to shave, as weird as that may seem, I just needed that deathly piece of cold steel against my ever so delicate skin.  Hmm, might make a great start harlequin novel.  Never mind.

As for the prep, I did the ritualistic stropping and a shower to prep for my awaiting friend to do his dirty work.  I must say that I have really enjoyed my paddle strop.  It must be that it doesnt give when I whisk the razor across it.  I have been getting a much more defined edge on my razor I think, just seems to slice and dice my whiskers better.  As I am on the road I dont have the best of the best with me for facial preparation for cropping the two-day growth appearing on my face.

I have my backup equipment with me, as I have a new brush at home I have my old one with me though.  So no more boars hair for my face, designated for the ladybugs legs from here on out, thats another post for later.  I love my canister for my soap, just something about a shiny piece of metal that looks so cool.  At any rate got all lathered up, not the best I have had, but it was still nice to have a comforting feeling on the face.  Aside from ladybug touching my face, I think a nice lather is a one of those great feelings.  Ok, I keep getting side tracked, back to the shave.

The old Prima came thru today.  It was in its prime today, if it had a face it would have had a game on it.  From the first stroke to the last it just kept going and going.  I just couldnt stop how well it did today.  I guess I had a hand in it as well.  My touch was spot on, and I didnt pressure the blade into doing anything it didnt want to.  I did one pace wtg and one atg.  If I say so, I think I clean up pretty good, is that a bit narcissistic?  Oh well, I dont care if I have to look good, it just comes to me.

Aside from being self-absorbed, I think that I feel great after this shave.  I even got super close on my chin without feeling the burn after.  It was kind of weird, the blade just went where it wanted to.  I literally felt like I was just holding on to the blade and it was guiding me instead of me guiding it.  Was cool, it was a peak in my lately plateau in straight shaving.  I think there is something to be said for taking a break once in a while for any one given task.  The DE has been a nice and welcome change.  Helped me to just enjoy shaving even when I dont have a bunch of time.  Let me refocus a bit so I can come back to straights renewed in a way.

After shave was nice, no long-lasting sting.  I think you will feel a sting regardless of what you use.  The pores are open for business and like to let you know that you are trying to close them up.  As long as it is a short tingle and not a long burn, you are doing ok with shaving.  I am glad today went so well as life has been so hectic, I needed something familiar to come back to and enjoy.  Something to slow me down again.

So till next time, cant wait till the next shave.

Road Shaving, DE shave 3

On the road again,

Well I am happy to report I am still happy with my DE.  I love this thing, I cant believe how we have gone so askew from these types of razors.  Where did we go wrong?  How did we let the big corporations rule our shaving world?  Did we let the media get out of control with its marketing?  While there might be some very legitimate and educated responses to all of these, I say we just let ourselves go astray.  We became pray to the elusive “Better Shave” with less time and more blades.  Well all know that there is strength in numbers, you all so get your butt handed to you by numbers as well.  It is never a good thing when you are backed into a corner being faced with multiple sharp objects, neither is it good for your face.  Like the old saying, why do more with less, when less is more.  Well its one I have heard any way.

As for the shave, it was the best I have had being away from me casa.  I stepped up and bought a nother badger brush so now I have one for the road as well.  Last night was heaven on a blade.  It just isnt even in the same time zone as the other razors, maybe even the same planet.  I took just as much time to do my face as it would with a mach3, and I got much more comfortable and better results.  I didnt have any burning, rash, cuts, nicks or screaming.  My face still doesnt look like five o’clock shadow and its almost 24 hours later.  Try getting that from a five bladed stick from hell.  I tell you what, even if I cant convince you to give up that piece of junk multi anti-wounder, at least use proper prep.  Get a brush and some soap, do it right from the start.  Your face will thank you.

Ok, as for the rest of the shave.  I did the first swipe all with the grain.  Did a nice close shave but still could run my fingers over my face and feel stubble.  So I decided to get frisky and go against the grain.  I was worried as I had not done it with this razor yet.  There aint no training wheels on a DE.  They call them a safety razor, but I dont know why.  I will still slice you like a piece of pizza.  But all is well in my shaving world, I didnt get any blood seeping from my pores.  I know, 911 was disappointed for not getting a call tonight, maybe on my next straight shave.

So after that I patted my face dry and applied my second best nivea balm, little sting since it aint the comfort stuff I have at home.  Went to bed and was pleasantly surprised to not have to shave in the morning to go to work.  I love this shaving stuff, never could say that before.  I am a changed man, I am the Shaver, I am shavetastic.  Well at least my face is feeling better now a days.  So I will be reporting from the road for my next few shaves, stand by for the latest and greatest road shaving posts ever.  I know you are all just so excited for what I have to write next.

Till next time, cant wait for the next DE shave.

Reunited, shave 16

Its back, its back, hooray its back,

Well my first razor love is back safe and sound from the mighty honemiester over at SRD.  He was able to take my tragic accident and fix up the gal just like new.  Probably better than new since it has a fresh honing on it.  I tell you what there is nothing like a sharp razor on your face.  It just makes the world feel good again.

So in honor of the Prima Klang’s return I put it back to good use.  It is amazing the difference between the two razors.  The Prima is much lighter and thinner feeling the Micarta.  I like both, for different reasons.  I think I like the Prima because it is so light.  Seems I can move around my face a little better than with the Micarta.  But I like the Micarta for its bulky scales because when I am taking my sweet time it fits better in my hand.  So I will say they are different, yet equals.  Kind of like China and North Korea.  We will save the political talk for some other time, there are more serious matters to be had, like my last shave.

So as for the shave, it was nice being shaved by the sharpest love in my life.  She has known my face from the beginning.  Knows how to caress it, pamper me, and yet she still has an attitude that I could do with out.  She cut me to the quick, well thru my skin on my upper lip any way.  But no worries, I was reminded quickly that with any gal, when they are mad ya it’s for a reason.  This reason being I was putting too much pressure on her, so I backed off and everything was all right for the rest of the shave.  As usually still didn’t get as close as I wanted on my chin, over all though it was a nice shave.  Just have to get used to Prima’s intricacies again.

As for the post shave, she didn’t burn me to bad.  My chin did sting a little bit, so she still made her point tonight, “back off mister and just let me do the work”.  I will listen better next time, the old saying if you don’t succeed, try, try again.  Well I am like a scratched record, I keep repeating the same mistakes.  Luckly the mistakes are getting less and less, and the shaving is only getting better and better.  Well at least they are getting more constant any way.

Now I have a 1 in 2 rotation for my razor selection.  It is just so hard not to go out and grab another one, darn these addictive substances.  At least this addiction isnt self-destructive, its only facially destructive.  As long as I just back off and let them do their thing, I get some nice comfortable shaves.  I just hope they don’t gang up on me, the two of them could do some serious lasting damage.  At least it’s never dull when there around.  Yes, cheese I know, it’s what I do best.

Till next time, can’t wait till the next shave.

Some battle Damage, Shave 8.

Well I have some sad news to report today,

My trusty friend encountered some slight battle damage from the sink today.  I was trying a new method out for warming up the shaving mug with the later in it.  I do not recommend having both your shaving mug in the same sink that you are rinsing your razor off with.  I hit the bottom of the sink with the tip of the sharp edge and now I have to send it off to get fixed since I dont know how to hone yet.  Also my strop looks like a small animal attacked it with scrape marks all over it now.  So time for a new strop as well, oh darn I just have to get more shaving equipment, for shame.

Well onto the actual shave.  Aside from some minor cost in repairs to equipment, my shaving experience today was phenomenal.  I have to say the skills are getting honed in.  I do have to say, even though I wont do it again, that having my mug in warm water made the lather much better feeling, nice and warm.

Started out standard old wtg, then xtg, and slight atg today.  With a mix of all these strokes I actually got my face, even my chin, whisker free.  This was even not shaving for about four days.  Mind you it was like cutting down a small forest, it was still great.  My whiskers must be made of steel as well, I had to stop and strop for each side of my face.  It was strop numero dose that I discovered my nick in the blade.

So I will say, I feel really good about my face today.  Not that I had reason to doubt my face to begin with.  It doesn’t hurt hardly at all, although it might still break a camera or two.  And I only had to stop some minor bleeding on the ching from trying to perfect my shaving in that area.

Farewell my friend for a bit till we meet again after your make over.  I will miss you.  I might cheat on my razor and just pick up another one while it is out to the shop.  Who knows where this little affair might lead.

Till next time, Cant wait till the next shave.

My fury little friend

Here ladies and gentlemen is my brush,

I trust that no badgers were harmed in the creation of this brush, but probably a bit humiliated.  I mean honestly, how would you feel if some one shaved you bald and then sold your hair as a brush.  I would be fury of a frenzy.

This is what I use to apply the lather on my face before shaving.  Not too exciting, but the classics of straight razor shaving is all too neat that I must share.

This is a #4 Pure Badger brush made by Simpson Beaufort

And for kicks and giggles hear is the mug I use as well,

The ladybug and the little bug

Well time to introduce the family.

My better half, the Ladybug, and my small portion, the Little Bug.  Both are my world, I could not imagine living with out them.  Though I do enjoy a good break now and then when the Little Bug decides to turn into a stink bug now and again.  He love to entertain and also drive both me and the ladybug buggy.  He is a spit fire and a lover all in the same package.  So to say, a spitting fire love bug.

My ladybug is my one and only.  We met at school and have been goners for each other since.  We have been married for a multiple year mark now and even though I drive her a little buggy sometimes, she still is my bed bug every night.

So that is a short and brief introduction to my little family, hope you enjoyed.
